Financial reporting comparison

Joiin vs Fathom vs Spotlight: consolidated reporting compared

All three combine accounts from several companies into one set of reports. The price gap at your company count is larger than the feature gap, so count your companies first.

Quick verdict

Our assessment: start with Joiin if your main job is consolidating several companies' accounts into reliable monthly reports at the lowest published price. Look at Fathom if you also want three-way cash-flow forecasting, client benchmarking and polished advisory reports, and can pay roughly twice as much per company. Consider Spotlight Reporting if you are an accounting firm building an advisory service around forecasting and dashboards for many clients.

Joiin's grid does not say which of its plans (Core, Pro or Max) each figure belongs to, and Fathom does not state an annual-billing price. Spotlight's accounting-firm plans are separate: Basic NZD 329 for up to 10 organisations, and Super VCFO at NZD 495 for 25 or NZD 995 for 75 (Spotlight advisor plans). How to choose

  • Count companies and currencies. At 5 companies the published monthly prices range from $70 (Joiin) to $295 (Fathom Starter).
  • Decide whether you need forecasting. If you only report on actuals, Joiin's lower tiers may be enough; if forecasting is the service you sell, compare Fathom and Spotlight closely.
  • Test eliminations with your real data during the trial: intercompany loans and sales are where consolidation tools differ in practice.
  • Ask about exit. Can you export reports, mappings and history if you switch?

Questions to ask every vendor

  • Which plan and billing period does the quoted price cover at our company count?
  • How are intercompany transactions eliminated, and can we adjust them manually?
  • How often does data refresh from our accounting system?
  • What does adding one more company cost mid-contract?
